After cooking a big Saturday morning breakfast (scrambled eggs, toast, bacon, and coffee) - one of my favorite times of the week, my wife and I have settled down for some studying while the kids are napping. Julie is preparing to take the Colorado Bar Exam in July after graduating last year from law school. I am reading and writing for the two classes I'm taking toward my Master's in Theology at Fuller. Something I just read struck me. Speaking of the gospel writers, professor, scholar, and author David A. deSilva says...
'They could have addressed the short-term needs of Christians through a letter, as most early Christian leaders did. They preferred, however, to help their readers meet these challenges by bringing them in contact with the living Jesus, and to let him challenge and encourage them, reassure and provoke them, reminding them of who he is and what he seeks in his followers.'
Isn't this what we're all after!? To encounter the living Jesus! Where have you seen Jesus? I've seen Jesus in the nurture and grace of my wife. I've seen Jesus in the wonder, playfulness, and dependence of my children. I've seen Jesus in a nearly blind widow in rural Russia. I've seen Jesus in a teenage convict in Latin America. I've seen Jesus in a sick man living out his days in a hut in rural Ghana as Reverend Philip brings him the Holy Meal. I've seen Jesus in the desperate face of an orphaned child. Where have you seen Jesus? Are people encountering the living Jesus in you? May it be so.
