Wake up to a bright day.
That's what the Feast of Epiphany is all about. When the sun is dark - even going out - the revelation of Jesus as God With Us brings light and life to the world. It's a scary thing to think about - the sun going out. I've never seen the film, but after Sunday's sermon when I talked about Jesus as the Life-Light, someone from Mill Run Xalt, Isaac, recommended Danny Boyle's film, Sunshine. Check out the trailer.
The Church celebrates Epiphany today by talking about the visit of the Magi, the three Eastern philosophers and scientists who follow the bright star west to where Jesus is. Then in the coming weeks, we look at the Baptism of Jesus, his first recorded miracle in the John (turning water into wine at the wedding of Cana), and so on. Then we wrap up the season with a look at the Transfiguration... when this bright ball of Life-Light sent by God reveals who he truly is to his closest companions. It's a scary thing.
But it also warms and lights - that's what fire does. So this Epiphany we can combat the dark days and cold nights by coming close to the light of Christ and lighting up our world.
